Off the back of National Diabetes Week (11-17 July), we are bringing together a multidisciplinary team of allied health professionals and people living with diabetes, to share expert information and experiences with the goal of improving access to quality healthcare and optimising the lives of people with diabetes.

Rachael Baker

Guided by the belief that every person needs individualised care, Rachael Baker makes a real difference to the lives of people living with diabetes in Queensland. Rachael consults in Brisbane and Toowoomba, but caters for patients in regional and rural areas via Telehealth.

Supporting Macintyre Health’s paediatric and adult patients with everything from initial diagnosis, to insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring, education and ongoing care, Rachael is very passionate about staying up-to-date with the latest diabetes technologies and management strategies.

She takes a highly personalised approach, adapting programs to suit people at particular points in their lives. She strongly believes in becoming the patient’s trusted partner – tailoring a holistic diabetes management plan that works for the patient and optimises their clinical outcomes.

Rachael holds a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Queensland, as well as a postgraduate certification in Diabetes Education and Management from Deakin University. She is currently undertaking her Master’s in Nurse Practitioner with Flinders University and is engaged in the field of Research. She is also an active member of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, leading the Queensland network for the Private Practice Special Interest Group.

Rebecca Disher

With a double degree in Dietitics and Human Movements, Bec has been working in the health and fitness industry for over 10 years, both as a personal trainer and a nutritionist for sports teams such as State League netball and soccer teams.   Bec specialises in weight loss/management, chronic diseases such as diabetes management, Cardiovascular, kidney disease and respiratory conditions with a strong area of interest in sports nutrition as well.

Bec has represented Australia in Australian U/21 Netball Team and State teams in athletics, softball and swimming.  Working as a personal trainer and boxing coach Bec has developed a keen interest in hydration and recovery techniques.  She’s also had a lot of experience working with clients in setting and achieving goals, developing healthy eating plans, and working towards creating a healthy lifestyle with her clients.

Bec has also developed and implemented weight loss and pre-natal programs that have focused on both nutrition and exercise components.  She also has experience in delivering education sessions on many topics to a variety of age groups.  In particular working with clients to educate them on how to read food labels, how to maximise training with nutrition and Healthy eating.

Ashley graduated with a Bachelor of Sport & Exercise Science in 2014. Optimizing the health and wellbeing of others led her to complete a Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology (Hons) in 2016. Ashley believes that knowledge is power and uses education to improve client engagement and understanding of how exercise can be adapted to benefit their health. Ashley uses an evidence based approach to encourage positive lifestyle habits, manage long term health, movement, and pain through exercise in a fun and safe environment.

Ashley has had experience in occupational and clinical rehabilitation settings and has particular skill in working with clients who have cardiopulmonary or metabolic conditions, including:

  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Metabolic Conditions

Podiatrist

Thomas Hall

Podiatrist

Thomas enjoys a broad scope of podiatry including diabetic foot assessments, treatment of conditions of the toe nails and skin, orthotic therapy, footwear assessments and recommendations, sports injuries of the lower limb & biomechanical assessments.

Thomas is also an active member of the Australian Podiatry Association (QLD) and uses this membership regularly as he is always keen to keep up to date with the latest evidence and learn new skills to optimise his patient care. Thomas enjoys attending the Podiatry conferences as well as various other workshops that teach new Podiatric skills or improve current skills.
